Kangaroo is a recent work of Artist Gregg Hone. This work is part of the Australian Mammals series such as his work Kookaburra and the highly sort after Flying Fox. Follow Gregg’s artist journey on Instagram and Facebook.

Kangaroo

Kangaroo is inspired by a short parental experience of nursing to health an orphaned joey, before being released back to the harsh outback of northern South Australia. The unusual composition looks down at the baby kangaroo into his large black eyes. Meanwhile the joey looks back lovingly for guidance and comfort. Gregg’s drawing uses detailed line work creating an almost knitted, stuffed toy representation; reflecting the joey’s fragile age, innocence and dependence.

“Bushy was found in his mother’s pouch after she had been hit by a car along a desolate outback road. Just weeks old and barely able to stand, It was the first time I felt some kind of parental responsibility. He wouldn’t leave my side. He was so curious and learning from my ever move unlike any other animal I know. I could stare into his large dark eyes for hours, as he could stare into mine. He was so at home. The way he would hop through the back door and bounce head first into the large drawstring bag hanging on the lounge room door; as if it were his mother’s pouch. Then with a sudden flip, he would maneuver himself so that his head, legs, arms and tail would all hang out the top of the bag… happy and ready to watch the TV together.”
